That's also true with your Mac purchases: If you buy a new Mac you can download the latest version of all the iLife applications on your pre-Mac App Store macs.
I guess that is also true for iWork for the Mac now that it comes free with new Macs.

This even applies to replacement devices. My iPhone 5 was replaced in an Apple store and two weeks ago and I qualified for Pages, Keynote and Numbers afterwards.
And here's a work-around if you want them, but didn't get a new iPhone... I have an iPhone 5. I won't upgrade til next year (likely the iPhone 6 or whatever they call it). But my daughter (11 years old) went from a 4 to a 5C. She doesn't use or need iWork. So I logged into the App Store on her phone under my ID and downloaded them. I then logged out and had her log back in and delete them. I then went to my iPhone 5 and iPad Mini and they were now available to download, not purchase. :) The *free* part... the get them free with a new device is tied to the device, not the iTunes/AppStore ID. :)
